How to Brush Effectively

<< back

Brushing is the most important step in preventing cavities and gum disease. The “golden rule” is to brush TWO times EVERYDAY for TWO MINUTES each time.

Brushing with a manual toothbrush:

  1. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle where your teeth and gums meet- bristles should contact both the tooth and gum line.
  2. Starting on the bottom jaw at the very last molar on the left side work around all the teeth, using a gentle back and forth motion, to the last molar on the right side covering all cheek-side surfaces. Re-angle the brush to the gum line and repeat the sequence covering all tongue side surfaces. Repeat the same sequence again covering all chewing surfaces. Repeat sequence on upper teeth.

Brushing with an Electric toothbrush:

Brushing with an electric brush is similar to using a manual brush except the brush will do most of the work for you.

  1. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle where your teeth and gums meet- bristles should contact both the tooth and gum line.
  2. Turn the brush on and SLOWLY move the brush back and forth letting the brush do the scrubbing motions- you are just guiding the brush where to go. Again be sure to work in a pattern that ensures you cover all teeth and each surface of the teeth (cheek-side, tongue side and chewing surfaces).
An interesting fact: The right side of the mouth is often brushed less effectively by right-handed people and the left side of the mouth is brushed less effectively by left-handed people.
