Common Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can happen suddenly and without warning. Some of the most common include:
- Severe toothaches
- Knocked-out teeth
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Dental abscesses or swelling
- Broken fillings or crowns
Ignoring these issues may result in greater pain, infection, or even permanent damage. Early action can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
What to Do Immediately
Tooth knocked out?
Rinse it gently—do not scrub—and try placing it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saliva and seek help immediately.
Toothache or swelling?
Use a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Avoid heat or aspirin directly on the gum, as it can worsen the condition.
Broken tooth or filling?
Rinse your mouth with warm water, and avoid chewing on that side. Keep the area clean and covered until you get to a dentist.
